A court-appointed attorney representing my momma had left a message for me to return her calls days ago. I wasn’t expecting to have to meet her since my momma has gone through at least four lawyers since her sentencing, but I had to meet with her, and she wouldn’t take telling me whatever it was over the phone for an answer.

“Ms. Floyd is getting ready to go up before the board to see if she’s fit to be in a penitentiary.”

“Prison?”

She nodded.

“Why? She’s already been tried, and that’s why she’s doing her time in the ward.”

“She’s been there for over fifteen percent of her sentence so the state can reconsider her.”

“Without our consent?”

“Ms. Floyd, once Ms. Floyd was sentenced, the state now controls what happens to an inmate.”

“Patient. She’s a patient until her documents state otherwise.”

“Ms. Floyd was sent to a facility as a prisoner. I’m sorry, but those are just facts. I’m not here to debate with you, Ms. Floyd. Honestly I’m just doing my job in letting you know.”

“So, we can’t sit in on her hearing?”

“No, but I’m inclined to tell the next of kin the newest steps in the process.”

“You could’ve told me this over the phone. When is it happening?”

“Two weeks from today.”

“My momma isn’t fit to be in no fucking prison. She’s not mentally capable of being around other people. I need to get a lawyer to see if we can fight this. Will they allow me to get a lawyer?”

“It’s not uncommon, but I can tell you that it’ll be a fight.”

“Y’all don’t give a damn about these people, especially the black ones. You can see it for yourself that long ass rap sheet she has, and you want to put her in a fucking cell with others like an animal. We’ll fight then.”
